Not every day is the same is it? Some days we have more to look forward to than others. On really great days - our brains are in tune with our spirit, or maybe, it is our spirit that is more in tune with our brain. Today is also a special day as there are some family plans to meet, enjoy some wine and celebrate life. As I write this, it is 630a in the morning and I’m sitting in my favorite room of the house ( screened in porch). I’ve had my cereal and I’m sipping coffee. This is one of my favorite times of the day!
In my corporate career working for 3 different companies, I’ve been fortunate that it’s all been at the same location, Lincoln, NE. There have been some great times, and some not so great times. I suspect most jobs are like that. Problem for me is, I wanted more than a job - I was looking for some greater fulfillment.
Twelve years into my corporate life, I felt like I was spinning my wheels (ie. not feeling fulfilled). I recall a quote from the legendary personal development teacher, Jim Rohn, who said, “For things to change, you have to change.” For me, I went through a mentoring process to become a lay pastor - that led to a period of faith growth and fulfillment for about 14 years. That process added value to my corporate job which was now with its second company. I grew in people skills and promotions - it was a rewarding period. And yet, I still knew, I had lots more to give - I had untapped potential.
I have been in the corporate world for 33 years; and today, I am reflecting on the last 7 years since the third company purchased us. I am realizing that I have always found true fulfillment outside of the corporate environment. I look back at my lifelong interest in personal development, and realize - If I had only known then what I know now. I am still growing into my greater potential.
I am also thinking of my untapped potential to add value in a business that truly has been a life-long journey. When Kris and I started Leadership Harbor (LH) we loved (and still do) the connection to the John Maxwell Team (JMT). It had such a connection to things we’ve
each done in the past and enjoyed (Kris - Coaching churches; and me - Adding value to people on their faith journey). When we formed Leadership Harbor, we developed a tag line from our mission that means more today than it did as we started.
Leadership Harbor empowers others to realize their POTENTIAL with Confidence and Influence.
I am not perfect. I have not always fulfilled my potential, but when I am doing what I am supposed to be doing, I am unstoppable. I daily remind myself that I have more POTENTIAL. I am all about empowering myself and others to be and become all they were designed to become. We each put our pants on one-leg at a time, just like the super athletes and movie stars that seem to have it all. On the surface, we are just enamored with the Cinderella fairy tale/ Hallmark story, and the professional athlete success. And yet, they have some of the same problems we have. They had to work hard to get where they are.

You too can have your desired success. We just have to cultivate the desire and invest in our dreams to make them come true like they have. Rudyard Kipling once said, “If you don’t get what you want, it is a sign either that you did not seriously want it, or that you tried to bargain over the price.”
Untapped Potential
Today, as I finish up my coffee, and continue to develop my potential, especially, my untapped potential, I think of you. Unless you are working for a record setting company, I suspect that you also recognize that you have untapped potential. If you are the one responsible for the whole team, consider how much untapped potential your team has. When was the last time you sat down to examine your future, and your potential?
