“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?

It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” — Matthew 5:13 (ESV)
Being a leader is one of the most fulfilling and impactful roles we can embrace. Leadership goes beyond launching new ventures or forging uncharted paths. It’s about paving the way for others, creating opportunities for them to replicate your successes, and even surpass your achievements. True leadership inspires others to rise, contributing to something greater than yourself.
Leadership Is About Others
When you achieve influence, it’s easy to feel like you’ve arrived. But influence isn’t a final destination—it’s a starting point for a much bigger journey. The real joy of leadership comes from sharing your journey with others and enriching their paths. What good is reaching the summit if you can’t help others climb alongside you?
As leaders, we sometimes worry that bringing others along will diminish our own position. Perhaps we fear that empowering others might make the “top” too crowded. But true leadership is expansive. The more people we guide to positive influence, the more we collectively grow.
The Power of Salt
Matthew 5:13 uses the metaphor of salt to describe influence and impact. Salt brings out flavor; it enhances and preserves. In the same way, leaders enhance the lives of those they influence. But what happens if salt loses its taste? It becomes useless.
This analogy reminds us that influence must be intentional. We can’t rest on past achievements. Leadership requires us to keep our “saltiness” by staying engaged, learning, and investing in others. Our influence only grows when we use it to serve and uplift those around us.
Leadership Is Multiplicative
When you lead others effectively, you don’t just influence them—you empower them to influence others. The ripple effect of positive leadership can transform communities, organizations, and beyond. Every person you guide becomes a multiplier of the values and vision you’ve shared.
Leadership, then, isn’t about preserving your position but about expanding your legacy. It’s about ensuring that the journey you started becomes a path others can follow and enhance. Leadership isn’t about hoarding success; it’s about creating opportunities for success to flourish.
Keep Growing, Keep Giving
To maintain your “saltiness” as a leader, remember these principles:
Stay Intentional: Regularly evaluate how you’re using your influence. Are you actively investing in others?
Empower Others: Share your journey, skills, and knowledge to help others achieve their potential.
Lead by Example: Show others how to grow by continuing to grow yourself. Leadership isn’t static; it’s dynamic and ever-evolving.
Celebrate Their Success: True leadership joy comes from seeing others succeed—especially when their achievements surpass your own.
Outlive Your Limits
Leadership isn’t about resting at the top; it’s about continually paving the way for others. The more we inspire, empower, and guide those around us, the richer our leadership becomes.
Go, outlive your limits. Enrich the journey for those following in your footsteps, and savor the joy of seeing others rise. Together, we create a world where leadership is not just a role but a legacy.
