Be Intentional in Your Faith

Embracing The Call to Disciple

When I attended the International Maxwell Conference in March 2022, I was skeptical about

joining the Maxwell Leadership Certified Team. I wondered if it would truly resonate with my values. But a lunch with my friend John was pivotal. Hearing him share his vision, I realized that everything he teaches aligns with the gospel’s heart. He’s taken the Bible—life’s ultimate guide—and presented its truths in a way that’s accessible, removing the barriers that can make it feel intimidating.

Understanding The Great Commission

Take, for example, Jesus’ call in Matthew 28:16-20. We read of the Great Commission, a mandate that can often feel overwhelming. We face fears: fear of failure, fear of stepping into the unknown, and fear of the reactions of others. But in The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, John Maxwell gives us a clear path to overcome these fears and fulfill this call to "make disciples." Over the next 15 weeks, I’ll walk with you through each of these laws, exploring how they can shape our approach to discipleship.

The Law of Intentionality

Intentionality is key—discipleship doesn’t happen by accident. Preparing to share your faith goes beyond waiting for a chance to appear; it’s about being equipped to create opportunities. In 1 Peter 3:15, we’re reminded to “always be prepared” to share the hope we have, doing so with gentleness and respect. But readiness requires intentionality, just as any solid defense in sports requires preparation.

During my time as a defensive coordinator, I knew that the success of our team hinged on understanding the opponent, covering every gap, and anticipating the next move. In discipleship, we’re also called to be ready, to “cover the gaps” through study, prayer, and readiness for real-life conversations. Maxwell outlines eight “growth gaps” that can hinder our progress, which I’ll unpack weekly to help us all prepare for this journey.

Growing Through Discipleship

Seven years ago, my wife and I became parents through adoption, and in raising our son, I realized God was teaching me. Proverbs 22:6 encourages us to “train up a child,” but I’ve learned that God often uses discipleship to train us. So as we embrace this journey to disciple others, let’s also open ourselves to the lessons God is teaching us.

So, join me. Choose to be intentional. Prepare your defense. Put your plan into action. And, most importantly, listen for what God is teaching you in every step of this journey.
